A Heart on Hold

How do you sleep at night
    As I sleep at day?
How does your heart beat
    If it’s forced to stay?

I shall not ask how much
    Love is left each dawn
As this cannot be measured
    In percentages and fractions.

You asked me once,
    Twice, and again
But why disregard a feeling
    That has long been forgotten?

So I plead to the fates
    Why now? Why me?
Do I deserve such pride
    And flattery?

But we are both tied,
Chained to our worlds of clutter
Though somehow in this crazy chaos
Our paths intertwined and lured to each other

I must dissuade you, I live with the shadow
Of a past pulling me behind
Each step forward opens up
Another hurdle that leads me back on my feet.

The question now remains
    Whose heart is on hold?
Should we still set boundaries
    To an already found defeat?
